John P. Hubbard
Born – April 4, 1983. The day before his mother sang
in the Easter Contata while his father directed the choir. He was born
late afternoon in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
At three months he went to stay with Grandpa and
Grandma Smeby while mom and dad lead a youth missions trip to Puerto Rico
for two weeks.
At six months he had his first airplane ride to
Portland, Oregon where he was introduced to his great great uncle and aunt
Richards.
Two weeks later we moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa.
When he was three and ½ years old he moved to
Gbendembu, Sierra Leone.
At five grandpa and grandma Hubbard came to visit and
grandma taught him preschool.
First grade was in Kenosha, Wisconsin at Grant
Elementary school. The same school his father attended for three years.
Second grade through fourth he had mom and dad and
Grandma Hubbard as his teachers in Gbendembu.
Fifth grade was again at Grant Elementary school in
Kenosha.
Sixth grade was with mom and dad in Papua New Guinea
in the village of Takuru.
Seventh through tenth grade John flew to boarding
school at Ukurumpa. The school is a missionary kids school run by SIL. He
played on the soccer and softball teams.
Grade eleven was at Christian Life School in Kenosha,
WI. He was the starting goalie for the soccer club and ran the sound
system for the school.
Grade Twelve was in Guyana at the Georgetown American
School. He played soccer with a local soccer club.
Upon graduation he attended Southern Wesleyan
University in South Carolina and then came home for three months. He
played on the soccer team and was a cheerleader for several other sports.
In September of 2002 he moved to Minneapolis,
Minnesota and began work in construction.
In May 2003 John announced his engagement to Val
Nystrom.
In January 2004 John and Val were married in
Worthington, MN in the midst of an ice storm.
In May of 2004 John graduated from the Hennepin
Technical College with top honors in their Construction program.
John and Val are currently living on the Nystrom
Family orchard in Worthington, MN.
In January of 2008 John decided to return to
college to work on a BA degree. His goal is to complete his education
and seek employment as a industrial arts teacher in a local school.
Special Notes
John has always loved to help dad with his
construction projects. Learning to work cement and build as soon as he
could hold the tools.
He has developed a special skill with the scroll saw
and used it to make wood craft projects to sell and raise money to buy
office equipment for the work in Guyana.
He has gone scuba diving with his dad a number of
times and enjoys water activities.
His favorite sport is soccer and his position is that
of goalie. He was the starting goalie at CLS, was on a local soccer club
in Guyana and played one season with the SWU team.
He was the student class president for one year while
attending GAS in Guyana.
He has enjoyed running the sound equipment for CLS
and Charlotte Street Wesleyan in Georgetown, Guyana.
